Watermelon farming is the cultivation of watermelon with the aim of harvesting the fruits from the watermelon plants. Watermelon farming is one the most lucrative farming ventures in Nigeria.

Watermelon, botanically known as Citrullus Vulgaris is an annual fruiting vine that can be grown in irrigated land areas under a soil pH of 6.0 to 6.8 pH level and about 9-18 inch tall; 10-15 ft. spread size.

Watermelon comes from the Cucurbitaceae family and is a warm annual season crop with a large and juicy fruit loaded with good nutrients.

Watermelon crops can be produced on sandy loam rich, and the ideal PH range is 6.5 – 7.5.  Watermelon fruit is about 91% water, around 6% sugar and low amount of fat.

By growing watermelons in a farm, watermelon farmers can get a profit of 2 to 3 percent in 3 months duration of the watermelon maturing period.

In addition, commercial watermelon farming offers a huge profit by exporting the watermelon fruits to other states and countries.

Actually, the green part (shelf life) of watermelon crop lasts longer and its most eaten part remains edible for at least 3 to 4 weeks after harvesting if it doesn’t have spots or patches. That’s the reason why by exporting watermelons are very much possible and farmers can make a massive profit from that exercise.
